Biography

Dr. Thomas G Smith III grew up in Carrollton, Texas. He attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and graduated with a degree in biology. Upon graduating from Baylor, he attended the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston for medical school. After medical school, Dr. Smith completed 2 years of general surgery and 4 years of urology residency in Dallas, Texas at UT Southwestern medical center.

Following residency, Dr. Smith began his urologic career in Kerrville, Texas at Urology Associates of Kerrville. Subsequently, he became the managing partner in charge of billing and insurance activities for the practice. However, after five years he decided to specialize further in urology and completed one year fellowship in trauma and reconstructive urology with Dr. Hunter Wessells at the University of Washington, Seattle and Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Smith’s specialty training dealt with multiple related but unique areas of urology. The first dealt with the management of acute trauma and injury to the urinary system. A further aspect was reconstruction of the urinary tract in patients with problems from urethral strictures, radiation complications, incontinence, ureteral strictures, and genital skin reconstruction. Finally, the last emphasis was on erectile dysfunction and management of Peyronie’s disease.

Dr. Smith is very active in academic urology and has published numerous articles dealing with the treatment of urologic reconstruction and acute genitourinary trauma. He has also made several contributions to textbooks in urology. He has held academic positions at the University of Washington and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. He is currently an assistant professor in Houston, Texas at Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in urology and a member of the American Urologic Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Dr. Smith is a founding member and previous president of the Trauma and Urinary Reconstructive Network of Surgeons (TURNS). Baylor College of Medicine is one of 8 centers that collaborate in the study of patients treated for a variety of conditions in trauma and reconstructive urology. This network is designed to collect centralized data and provide sophisticated analysis of both surgical and patient reported outcomes from urethral stricture surgery, male incontinence and a variety of other conditions. This type of collaborative research effort is essential to moving forward outcome research that is increasingly important in modern medicine.

Furthermore, he serves as chief of urology at Ben Taub General Hospital, a busy level one trauma center and primary tertiary hospital in the Harris Health System. In this position, Dr. Smith is responsible for clinical and operational management of the urology department of a primary teaching hospital for Baylor College of Medicine.
